Oprah Winfrey Tops forbes most influential celebrity list
It is the fifth time the former talk show host has headed the annual ranking of 100 celebrities.
Singer Lady Gaga came in second, followed by director/producer Steven Spielberg and singers Beyonce and Madonna.
“There is nobody else with that kind of consistency and power,” said Dorothy Pomerantz of Forbes.com.
“There are only three people who have been on every single one of our lists since 1999. It is Oprah, Howard Stern and Steven Spielberg.”
With earnings of $77 million from June 2012 to 2013, Winfrey was not the highest earning celebrity, an honour that went to Madonna who made $125 million.
But Forbes said Winfrey’s position in Hollywood and her presence in the press, on television and in social media propelled her to the No. 1 spot.
“She still wields an enormous amount of power, which is really what we look for in our fame matrix. She is taking this cable network and turning it around just through the sheer force of her will, her connections and her ability.”
See the TOP20 of the list below:
1. Oprah Winfrey $77m
2 Lady Gaga $80m
3 Steven Spielberg $100m
4 Beyonce $53m

Terrorism: Ihejirika lauds Ndigbo for not attacking northeners
ONITSHA—The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, has
commended Ndigbo for not making the mistake of embarking on a reprisal
attacks against northerners resident in Igbo land during bomb attacks in
Kano and other parts of the north.
He said if Ndigbo had made such a mistake, the terrorists, would have satisfied their own aspirations in trying to create a state of anarchy in the country.
Ihejirika, who spoke at the Army Officers’ Mess, Military Cantonment, Onitsha, Anambra State, during the commissioning of some refurbished military vehicles, including prime movers, ammunition carriers and command post vehicles.
He said he was impressed that Ndigbo were sensible enough to have shunned reprisal attacks.
He expressed optimism that with the support of President Goodluck Jonathan and the Onitsha business community, the terrorists would not only be surmounted and kicked out of the country, but also kicked out of neighboring countries.
He also commended the Onitsha business community for the support and co-operation given to his officers and men in the commercial city and urged them not to relent in their efforts.
Ihejirika said: “My officers and men are here to do a peculiar and selfless job for mankind”.
He also warned the soldiers to be patient and avoid any act capable of tarnishing the image of Nigerian soldiers, particularly during this democratic dispensation.
Earlier in his remarks, Commandant of Army Corp Artillery of the Nigerian Army, Maj-Gen A. K. Kwaskebe, had commended Ihejirika for approving the refurbishment of miliary vehicles and equipment which were abandoned in Calabar, Cross River State, after some foreign peace missions.
Kwaskebe disclosed that some contractors had bidded for refurbishment at N300 million but added that the military applied direct labour which paid off as only N18 million was spent for the refurbishment.
He said of the amount, N2 million was expended on the procurement of tyres, while N3 million was used for the evacuation of broken down vehicles from Calabar to Onitsha.
Prominent businessmen who attended the ceremony included the chairman of Anambra State Security Trust Fund and chairman of GUO Group of Companies Limited, Chief G. U. Okeke; the chairman of Lake Petroleum Limited, Chief Cletus Mbaji, among others.
Meanwhile, the United Eastern Congress, a body standing as the central voice of the Easterners has described Ihiejrika’s visit to Onitsha Military Cantonment as a demonstration of his total love every Igbo man has for the unity of this entity called Nigeria.
The President of the association, Nze Sam Ike, who made the commendation, said the Chief of Army Staff had in less than three years in office, proved that his appointment as the COAS by the President Goodluck Jonathan was well placed.

Oil discovered in Lagos
LAGOS—Nigeria’s commercial capital, LAGOS, is on the verge of joining
the country’s oil-producing states with the discovery of crude oil in
commercial quantities in the coastal state.
Yesterday, Afren Plc and its partner, Lekoil Limited, announced significant oil discovery offshore Dahomey Basin in Lagos, according to the London Stock Exchange.

In separate announcements, the partners said they discovered a significant light oil accumulation based on the results of drilling and wire line logs from a high impact Ogo-1 well, located on the Oil Prospecting Licence, OPL 310 offshore Nigeria.
Afren is optimistic that the discovery is likely to be significantly higher than the anticipated 78 million barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe), which encourages search to further high potential zones.
The discovery is subject to the authentication of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), which is expected in two weeks.
If certified and the partners produce the first barrel of oil, Lagos will become the 11th oil producing state in Nigeria, a club Anambra State joined recently. It will also boost the economy of Lagos, which currently generates about N29 billion internally every month.
The other oil producing states are Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Ondo, Abia, Imo, Edo and Cross River.
Geological studies indicate that the Dahomey Basin is a combination of inland/coastal/offshore basin that cuts across some West African countries including Lagos, Nigeria as well as Southeastern Ghana, Togo and the Republic of Benin.
The basin is said to be separated from the Niger Delta by a surface basement popularly called the Okitipupa Ridge.
“The Ogo-1 well has been drilled to a total measured depth of 10,518 ft (10,402 ft true vertical depth sub sea), and has encountered a gross hydrocarbon section of 524 ft, with 216 ft of net stacked pay.
“The well was targeting 78 mmboe of gross P50 prospective resources, but based on evidence to date, targeted resources are likely to be significantly in excess of previous estimates,” Afren said in a statement made available to Vanguard.
The company added that “further evaluation using wire line log analysis is currently underway prior to extending the well to a total measured depth of 11,800 ft (11,684 ft true vertical depth sub sea) to target further high potential zones.”
A top management source in the upstream unit of the regulatory agency, said: “As far as we are concerned, the discovery for now is very speculative. The side track will indicate whether the resource they have found is actually crude, and this verification takes about two weeks. Thereafter, the company will communicate the tracking result to us, after which we will certify the discovery.”
Partners plan side track
Ahead of the planned ST, Afren expressed confidence that estimated reserves of about 124 mmboe have a better than 50 per cent, P50, chance of being technically and economically producible.
“Partners intend to drill a planned side-track, Ogo-1 ST, which will test a new play of stratigraphically trapped sediments that pinch-out onto the basement high targeting 124 mmboe of gross P50 prospective resources,” it confirmed in the statement.
Commenting, the Chief Executive of Afren, Mr. Osman Shahenshah, said: “The discovery of oil in the Ogo-1 well opens up a new oil basin in an under-explored region and represents a possible extension of the West African Transform Margin.
“Based on evidence to date, targeted resources are likely to be significantly in excess of previous estimates, with some high-potential zones still to be drilled. We look forward to working with our partners to realise the full potential of Ogo 1 and our additional prospects on the licence.
“The Ogo-1 exploration success follows a series of recent discoveries, Okoro Field Extension, Ebok North Fault Block and Okwok in Nigeria and Simrit-2 and Simrit-3 on the Ain Sifni Block in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.”
On his part, Lekoil CEO, Mr. Lekan Akinyanmi, said: “The discovery of oil in the Ogo-1 well opens up a new oil basin in an under-explored region and represents a possible extension of the Cretaceous play along the West African Transform Margin. The discovery is a clear validation of Lekoil’s technical analysis and of our extensive studies on the Dahomey Basin.
“Results to date indicate that the discovered resources could be significantly in excess of P50 estimates prior to drilling. While Lekoil notes these results are preliminary, we believe there exists substantial scope for upward revisions to the data announced today (Wednesday) as drilling and interpretation continues.
“We look forward to working with our partners to realise the full potential of Ogo and the additional prospects on the licence.”
The operating licence for OPL 310 acquired in 2009, is valid till February 2019. But equity participation and economic interests on the bloc now stands as follows below:

Obama tells Africans that gays deserve quality
DAKAR (AFP) – US President Barack Obama told Africans Thursday that
gays deserve equality under the law, as Nelson Mandela’s plight and a
global spying drama threatened to detract from his first tour of the
continent.
Obama struggled to keep the focus on his goals for the week-long trip, also scheduled to stop in South Africa and Tanzania, as he sought to fulfil neglected African expectations for America’s first black president.
He stepped on delicate ground when asked by reporters to comment on a landmark US Supreme Court ruling on same sex marriage while visiting a country where homosexuality is a crime and rights groups decry gay harassment.
Obama said he understood that different religions and cultures adhered to different beliefs and traditions, but that the simple principle of equality should be the guide for states and governments.
“I want the African people to just hear what I believe,” Obama said.
“My basic view is that regardless of race, regardless of religion, regardless of gender, regardless of sexual orientation, when it comes to how the law treats you… people should be treated equally.”
Senegalese President Macky Sall replied that though Senegal was a “very tolerant country which does not discriminate in terms of inalienable rights of the human being”, it was not ready yet to decriminalise homosexuality.
“But of course this does not mean that we are all homophobic.”
Obama said he still planned to head for South Africa on Friday, despite speculation that with anti-apartheid icon Mandela apparently close to death, his plans could be thrown into disarray.
The president said he was drawn into political activism by Mandela as a student, and had been inspired by his example in embracing his long-time captors in a spirit of national unity.
“I think he is a hero for the world and if and when he passes from this place, one thing I think we will all know is, his legacy is one that will linger on through the ages,” Obama said.
Obama also had to parry questions about the chase for fugitive US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden, who is holed up in limbo in Moscow airport, but he appeared keen to bring the focus back to Africa.
“In the meantime, we’ve got other business to do. For example, we’re here in Africa and I don’t want people to forget why we’re here,” Obama said.
“The fact of the matter is that Africa oftentimes is not focused on by our press and our leadership back home unless there’s a crisis.”
Obama’s tour is meant to promote democratisation and trade and business links on a continent he said is poised to break out economically, and which has attracted lavish attention from US rivals like China.
“I see this as a moment of great progress and great promise for the continent,” Obama said.
“It’s true that Africa faces great challenges, and meeting these challenges together is a focus of my trip. But all too often the world overlooks the amazing progress that Africa is making.”
Washington is keen to highlight Muslim-majority Senegal as an example of democracy and good governance in a corner of Africa plagued by instability and the threat of Islamic extremism in neighbouring Mali.
“Senegal is one of the most stable democracies in Africa and one of the strongest partners that we have in the region,” Obama said as he stood side-by-side with Sall.
“It is moving in the right direction, with reforms to deepen democratic institutions. I believe Senegal can be a great example.”
Later, in a moment of potent symbolism, Obama will take a ferry to Goree Island off the Senegal coast, a memorial to the hundreds of thousands of Africans claimed by the slave trade.
In a “full circle” moment of history, Obama, the son of a Kenyan father, and his wife Michelle, the descendent of slaves, will acknowledge a dark period of American and African history which resonates today.
Obama claims a spiritual connection to Africa, but a crush of international crises in his first term thwarted his hopes to travel extensively on the continent. He did manage a short trip to Ghana in 2009.
But there was still disappointment in Africa, where Obama’s 2008 election caused euphoria and expectations that he would put US policy towards the continent at the top of his agenda.

Don't sell national Theartre, RATTAWU warns
THE Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria,
RATTAWU, Wednesday, asked the National Assembly to reject attempts to
sell the National Theatre, which is one of the few “remaining national
edifices that symbolize the Nigerian nationhood.”
It warned that the nation’s unity would would be under threat by the sale.
RATTTAWU
also decried what it described as “the haste and high level of impunity
with which relocation of Art and Cultural related parastatals is being
handled,” saying it was suspicious.
According to the Lagos State chapter of RATTAWU, Godwin Itotowa, “concessioning of the National Theatre through Public Bureau Enterprises, BPE, is no news to Nigerians generally and specifically to stakeholders in the Arts and Culturel sector.”
Itotowa said that under the leadership of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo the attempt was massively rejected and jettisoned, adding “Arts and Culture is a supposed verifiable tool for national integration, unity and development, especially at this very state of the nation.
“The forerunner in Arts and Culture sector reasoned well enough to have kept the Theatre… Among such other parastatals are National gallery of Arts, National Council for Arts and Culture, National Institute for cultural Orientation and National Troupe of Nigeria. By the provisions of National Council for Arts and Culture (Amendment) Decree 1987, Section 3(1) (a) – (g); where the functions of the council is spelt out, this move will not only prevent her from performing it’s statutory roles but negate the principles that guide and engender the attainment of these functions.
“The National Troupe of Nigeria, as a parastatal established by Decree 47 of 1991 is responsible for showcasing the nation’s rich cultural heritage internationally and locally.
The Decree provides that it is to be governed by the same board, pension scheme as National Theatre and is to be housed by the National Theatre. In fact, the parastatal is the soul of the National Theatre. Without the National Troupe, the Theatre is an empty edifice only for wedding ceremonies and Annual General meetings of companies. Decree 47 of 1991 has not been amended or repealed by the law makers.”

Only undemocratic govs support jang- Amaechi
ABUJA— EMBATTLED Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum and
Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, yesterday, maintained
that only undemocratic governors were supporting his rivalry and
Governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang.
Amaechi who spoke at a symposium on Review of the 1999 Constitution and its impact on the much needed judicial reforms, organized in Abuja by the Rule of Law
Foundation, said he was surprised that even Governor Jang, who he said participated in the election that saw his re-emergence as the NGF chairman, turned around to thwart a process he said was impeccable and highly transparent.
He further stressed that aside Jang, all the other governors that attended NGF meeting on the day the election was held, voluntarily participated in the exercise. In attendance at the symposium were two former Chief Justices of Nigeria, Muhammadu Uwais and Dahiru Musdapher, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, Justice Sylvester Nguta of the Supreme Court and the Attorney General of Ekiti State, Wale Fapohunda.
Besides, Amaechi, wondered why Jang, after voting during the election, made a volte-face to claim that he was ab-initio endorsed to take over the leadership of the NGF.
He said: “NBA cannot afford to lose their voice. NBA has lost its voice. For NBA to see a free and fair election where 35 governors that govern 35 states and make decisions for hundreds of millions of people and for NBA to say ‘if you cannot organize yourselves dissolve. Then you have lost your voice.
“I want to say it and I want to be put on record, anyone who supports the Jang faction is undemocratic. We chose who should be the returning officer. We appointed our director general to be the returning officer for the election. And we voted. Everybody voted including Jang.
In fact, Jang was among the first persons to vote. And when I won, they were there. We were to commence voting for the chairmanship when my brother and colleague from Akwa Ibom got up and said there was a document I had where 19 governors had signed for us.
And Jang said northern governors forum supported him but the same northern governors voted and they should have, therefore, voted for him. He said PDP governors supported him at a meeting before the election, so they should have voted for him.
What Jang is leading is another faction of PDP governors forum and not the NGF, because there are no two governors forum.”
“Therefore anyone, NBA, or government that supports Jang’s faction is undemocratic.
“Let us put it on record that the way things are going, 2015 we should be careful it does not end in this manner where people we win democratic election and those in power will not accept the result of a free and fair election. My lords be prepared because we shall soon be coming to your court.
“We must defend democracy. We must defend Nigeria because we don’t have any other country.
“My Lords we must be prepared. As you did in 2007. We must be prepared.
“We have started again with tyranny and oppression. We must be prepared as a people to defend our rights. We must be prepared as a people to hold government accountable.
“We must be prepared to demand for accountability
“We must resist a situation where public officers without statutory authority would call the Inspector General of Police to change commissioner of police, we must resist it.”

NDLEA arrests 194 suspected drug offenders in Delta
Ogwashi-Uku (Delta) – The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency
(NDLEA) has arrested 194 drug suspects and confiscated 23.6 kilogrammes
of cannabis and other drugs in nine months in Delta.
The Commandant, NDLEA, Delta, Mr Sumaila Ethan, who disclosed this to reporters on Thursday in Ogwashi-Uku, added that out of those arrested were 169 males and 25 females.
According to him, the women are mainly involved in the sales of the substances.
He said the command in a single operation intercepted and seized 17 tonnes of cannabis concealed in a fuel tanker transported to the state as fuel.
Ethan said that apart from cultivating cannabis, the state also served as store for cannabis brought in from the neighbouring Edo and Ondo states.
“The theme for this year international day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking is, “New Psychoactive Substances”, while the slogan is “Make health your new ‘Hi’ in Life Not Drugs”.
“The command seized 23.6 kilogrammes of assorted exhibits such as cannabis, cocaine, heroine, psychotropic and other drugs,’’ he said.
Ethan said the command secured 30 convictions within the nine months, while other cases were still pending in various courts.
He said that the command also counselled and got 12 clients integrated back to the society, while other three clients were presently undergoing counselling within the command.
He said that the command had aside the counselling given lectures to students in secondary schools and the higher institutions, encouraging them to set up clubs to fight drug abuse in their institutions.
According to him, it is a herculean task fight against users of the exhibits because most communities cultivate, earn their living and train their children from the proceeds realised from cannabis.
Ethan, however, called on the state government to partner the agency in order to reduce the impact of drug abuse on the people, mostly the youths.
“We all know the consequences of drug abuse and its worst when it affects the person’s brain, this could lead to outright madness,” the commandant said. (NAN)

Skipping breakfast may raise diabetes risk
Skipping breakfast every day may be a bad idea after all especially if
you are overweight because it could increase the risk of developing
diabetes.
A small new study found that when women skipped the morning meal, they
experienced insulin resistance, a condition in which a person
requires more insulin to bring their blood sugar into a normal range,
explained Dr. Elizabeth Thomas, an instructor of medicine at the
University of Colorado.
This insulin resistance was short-term in the study, but when the
condition is chronic, it is a risk factor for diabetes, Thomas said.
She is due to present her findings at the Endocrine Society’s annual
meeting in San Francisco.
“Eating a healthy breakfast is probably beneficial,” Thomas said. “It
may not only help you control your weight but avoid diabetes.”
Diabetes has been diagnosed in more than 10 million Nigerians. Most
have type 2 diabetes, in which the body does not make enough insulin
or does not use it effectively. Excess weight is a risk factor for
diabetes.
The new study included nine women. Their average age was 29, and all
were overweight or obese. Thomas measured their levels of insulin and
blood sugar on two different days after the women ate lunch. On one
day, they had eaten breakfast; on the other day, they had skipped it.
Glucose levels normally rise after eating a meal, and that in turn
triggers insulin production, which helps the cells take in the glucose
and convert it to energy.
However, the women’s insulin and glucose levels after lunch were much
higher on the day they skipped breakfast than on the day they ate it.
On the day they did not eat breakfast, Thomas explained, “they
required a higher level of insulin to handle the same meal.”
“There was a 28 percent increase in the insulin response and a 12
percent increase in the glucose response after skipping breakfast,”
she said. That’s a mild rise in glucose and a moderate rise in
insulin, she noted.
Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and
conclusions are viewed as preliminary until published in a
peer-reviewed journal.
“Their study doesn’t prove causation,” said Dr. Joel Zonszein, a
professor of clinical medicine at the Albert Einstein College of
Medicine and director of the Clinical Diabetes Center at Montefiore
Medical Center, in New York City.
The study found only a link or association between breakfast skipping
and higher insulin levels. More research is needed for confirmation,
another expert said.
“This is a small, but very interesting, study,” said Dr. Ping Wang,
director of the University of California, Irvine, Health Diabetes
Center. “The findings will have to be verified with larger studies.”
Whether the effect is short-term or long-term is not known, Wang said.
Zonszein recommends against either skipping meals or eating very
frequent meals, the so-called nibbling diet. “Studies done in Europe
have shown that a large meal in the middle of the day is better than a
large meal at dinner,” he said.
However, he acknowledged that pattern is more of a habit in Europe
than in the United States. Even so, he advises his patients to eat a
good breakfast, a good lunch and a lighter dinner.
Other ways to reduce diabetes risk, according to the American Diabetes
Association, are to control weight, blood pressure and cholesterol and
to be physically active.

Keshi has reached his limit- Osaile
Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi has continued to receive attacks from critics over the team’s early ouster from the ongoing FIFA Confederations Cup after successive defeats to Uruguay and Spain.
Sports analyst and promoter, Martins Osaile was sarcastic in his reaction to what he termed the team’s under-achievement in the tournament. “Please, send my congratulations to Keshi,” Osaile started, trying to mask the rage in him.
“Keshi has achieved his long term dream. At least two or three of the boys are now in the market and the agents can now sell them for millions of dollars.”
The former boxing promoter said that Keshi’s managerial ability was poor as there was no reason for him to have left some of Nigeria’s most experienced players out of the squad that prosecuted the Confederations Cup in Brazil.
“No country can ignore the likes of Osaze whom Keshi has blacklisted because of personal differences. There are some players in the present squad that have no business wearing the national colours but because he feels he can make something out of them, he keeps inviting them,” Osaile alleged.
He said the NFF made a grave mistake when they kicked out Shaibu Amodu after he qualified the country for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. “We will continue to totter until the NFF corrects that mistake. Keshi has reached his limits. He can’t offer more.

Google maps malicious websites.
SAN FRANCISCO – Google expanded its Transparency Report on Tuesday to include maps of spots around the world where hackers are laying traps or baiting Internet users.
“Two of the biggest threats online are malicious software that can take control of your computer, and phishing scams that try to trick you into sharing passwords or other private information,” Google engineer Lucas Ballard said in a blog post.
“So today we’re launching a new section on our Transparency Report that will shed more light on the sources of malware and phishing attacks.”
Information for the new section comes from a Safe Browsing program Google launched in 2006 to warn Internet travelers when they were heading for trouble such as bogus bank websites or pages booby-trapped with computer viruses.
“We’re currently flagging up to 10,000 sites a day, and because we share this technology with other browsers there are about one billion users we can help keep safe,” Ballard said.
The new section added at google.com/transparencyreport included a map that showed that “malware” hotspots include India and Central Europe.
Google’s Transparency Report also provides information about government requests around the world for information from the California-based Internet giant and demands for removal of content from online properties.
Last week, Google said that it asked a special US court handling national security investigations for permission to publish more open with the public about numbers of requests.
The court filing in Washington came amid a firestorm of protests over revelations that the National Security Agency had accessed vast amounts of data in a surveillance program under the supervision of the secret court

NGF crisis: Drama as lawyer fight over jang in court
ABUJA—THERE was a mild drama before an Abuja High Court in Jabi, yesterday, as two Senior Advocates of Nigeria, clashed in the open court over who was duly briefed by the factional chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, and governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang, to represent him in the suit entered against him by Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State.
Immediately the case was called-up in court, the two SANs, Chief Tayo Oyetibo and Paul Erokoro, separately announced their appearances, with each of them, insisting that he had the mandate of Governor Jang to file processes in opposition to the suit.
Both lawyers maintained that having been duly briefed by Jang regarding the matter, they proceeded with filing separate preliminary objections before the court seeking the dismissal of Fashola’s suit.
Ferocious argument
Following an argument that ensued between the two senior counsel over who should he allowed to represent Jang in the matter, Justice Peter Affen, decided to adjourn the case till July 3, to enable the SANs sort themselves out. Before adjourning the case, however, Justice Affen, who was visibly irked by the uncanny drama that played out, said he would not tolerate anyone bringing to his court confusion capable of exposing the judiciary to public ridicule.
Meanwhile, Fashola’s counsel, Professor Yemi Osibanjo, SAN, who appeared alongside Lagos-based human rights activist, Mr Femi Falana, SAN, prayed the court to go ahead and dismiss Jang’s objection, despite who between the contending lawyers filed it.

Osibanjo vehemently opposed the idea of granting a stand-down in the matter to allow Governor Jang sort out the confusion. He said: “We do not need a stand down, as there are two counsel for a party, it is an abuse of court process. My Lord, this was the same confusion they brought to the Nigeria Governors Forum, now their plan is to bring the same confusion to this court.”
At that juncture, Justice Affen enjoined all the lawyers to act with caution, noting that the judiciary was in the spotlight again. He said that lawyers should not do anything that would erode the credibility, adding: “Let us not toe the line of the Nigeria Governors Forum. We are here to resolve their differences and not to add to it.”
Consequently, he held that in view of the conflict in representation, the best thing was to adjourn the case.
It will be recalled that Jang had in one of his counter-affidavits filed by Oyetibo, SAN, urged the court to strike out Fashola’s suit against him for being frivolous. It was his argument that the Lagos State governor was bereft of the legal right to seek an order restraining him from parading himself as chairman of the NGF.
He further challenged the jurisdiction of the court to hear and adjudicate on the matter, contending that “any dispute within NGF cannot be taken to an Abuja High Court by virtue of Part C of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA), which prescribes that disputes should be resolved at the Federal High Court instead.”
Describing the dispute bedeviling the NGF as “non-justiceable as it relates to a mere dispute as to political dignity”, Jang, maintained that the fact that Fashola never contested the NGF chairmanship election, stripped him of the legal right to institute or sustain the action.
Describing the dispute bedeviling the NGF as “non-justiceable as it relates to a mere dispute as to political dignity”, Jang, maintained that the fact that Fashola never contested the NGF chairmanship election, stripped him of the legal right to institute or sustain the action.
He argued that Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State who Fashola claimed won the election, never complained to the court that his mandate was usurped nor was he named or joined as a party to the suit.
Jang further maintained that going by the way the suit was couched between the governor of Lagos State and his Plateau State counterpart, the Plaintiff suggested a dispute between Lagos and Plateau States governments which automatically stripped every court of jurisdiction, save the Supreme Court which is bequeathed with the exclusive jurisdiction to determine or resolve disputes between governments of states or state and federal government.
He said: “Traditionally, the NGF does not hold elections to produce a chairman. It is the practice that the chairman of the Forum is appointed by consensus of the members. Where a consensus cannot be reached, the candidate supported by a simple majority would become the chairman.
“In pursuance of that fact above, Governor Amaechi was informed that nineteen of the thirty-six Governors of the states of the Federation have indicated in writing their decision to support Governor Jonah Jang as Chairman of the NGF

Alleged police harrasment of supporters worries Amachi
PORT HARCOURT — GOVERNOR Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State, has expressed worries with the alleged harassment, yesterday by the Police of some Rivers citizens, who were on their way to pay him a solidarity visit.
The governor at Government House, Port Harcourt, when he received the people on solidarity visit from Orashi region, said some persons had reduced Rivers State to a Police state.
He said he will continue to fight for the rights of the people of the state, adding that he would soon lead hundreds of Rivers people on a street protest, to challenge the recent ban of such action by the state Police Commissioner.
According to him, protest is part of the fundamental human rights of Nigerians, enshrined in the constitution, hence it cannot be outlawed by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Joseph Mbu.
The governor said: “The state Commissioner of Police cannot ban protest, when it is your fundamental rights and it is enshrined in the constitution. They can bring so many Mbu but promise me that you will resist them the way you did today (yesterday). We will take a date to demonstrate. I had told the Commissioner of Police to shoot me. I will be in front, I will lead the march with you my people to the Secretary to the State Government, who will receive our protest letter.”
Amaechi said the people have a right to express their views legitimately on any issue, including attacking his government, if he was not performing. He assured that he would continue to utilise the funds of the state for the development of the area.
Thanking the people of Orashi region for the solidarity visit, the governor said his administration would construct a bridge connecting Abua and Agbandere. He said he will also construct a road between Abua-Odua.
Some of those who spoke earlier for the people, lauded the success of the Amaechi administration in several areas. They also pledged the support of Orashi people to the government. They appealed for federal presence in Orashi region.
Orashi region is made up of Ahoada West, Ahoada East, Ogba Egbema Ndoni and Abua-Odua Local Government Areas.
In a chat later with newsmen, Chairmen of the four local governments alleged that the Police made effort to stop people of their various councils from coming to Port Harcourt for the solidarity visit.
Chairman Ahoada West council, Mr Awori Miller and his Ogba Egbema Ndoni counterpart, Mr Austin Ahiamadum, said some indigenes of their councils, who were coming for the visit were almost turned back by the Police at Rumuji.
“Our people had to insist that it was their right to come on the solidarity visit,” they said.

COURT ORDERS ARREST OF EFCC BOSS, LAMORDE.
ABUJA — Justice Peter Kekemeke of an Abuja High Court has ordered the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar to arrest the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Lamorde, for disobeying a valid court order.
Justice Kekemeke directed that the EFCC boss and an operative of the anti-graft agency, Mr Friday Ebelo, should be apprehended and kept in prison custody within the next two weeks, except they apologize to a lawyer whose fundamental human rights were allegedly violated by the commission.
Meantime, EFCC, yesterday, vowed to appeal the ruling.
We ‘ll appeal ruling — EFCC
Reacting to the order, spokesman of the commission, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, who acknowledged that a copy of the order was served on the agency, said EFCC has perfected plans to get it vacated.
The court had on March 8 and December 5, 2012, ordered Lamorde to release the call-to-bar certificate of one Mr Innocent Onwu, apologize to him through a national newspaper as well as pay him N50, 000 as compensation.
Onwu who is an Abuja-based lawyer had on October 31, 2011, initiated a fundamental rights enforcement proceeding after he was detained by the EFCC between June 27 and July 1, 2011 without order of court.
His detention was sequel to a petition by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, accusing him of complicity in fraud pertaining to a case he was investigating for a client.
Dissatisfied with the way he was allegedly manhandled by the commission, Onwu demanded N300 million as compensation for the unlawful search of his house and office and the trauma he suffered in the hands of the EFCC.
Besides, the lawyer, claimed his ailing mother was admitted at the Garki General Hospital on the day he was arrested by the EFCC, insisting that despite his passionate pleas, the commission refused to release him to attend to his mother, resulting to her death three days later.
The court had on June 4 and June 24 this year, dismissed two applications filed by the EFCC counsel, Mr James Onu, wherein he sought to void the contempt proceeding.

What is the state of your health?
The state where we are is the state we actually need a transplant. When early diagnosis was done it was just a case of Renal Infection. Right now, the two kidneys are gone, but we a running dialysis at the moment.
When did you observe that you have this illness?
It was two years ago, but it was not depreciated to this level. Then it was a gradual process. it was just like a doctor’s prescription to control your blood pressure level. we did all that , but having off and on experience until it got to this stage.
What would you attribute to this ailment?
Most time people tend to atribute kidney problem to drunkenness or smoking. I was told that it doesn’t have anything to do with that, because as much as i drink and smoke then, it was casual drinking. maybe, they offer you a bottle of drink and all that, not that i have to drink 15 bottles or drink all through the day.
How much do you need for a transplant?
For transplant itself, it varies, because the procedure is $25000. The whole process of the treatment from pre-process,transplanting and post-transplanting will cost about $100,000. I(n two years i have spent up to five million which i have been trying to maintain myself. that is why it has been kept secret.
When are you going for the transplant?
God willing, i have like 8 to 10 weeks more to get it done. It’s strange, i still walk around a little. I can’t eat much again, N20 rice is even enough. I trust God and Nigerians for their financial assist
