UN to feed 1 million patients in Ebola hit countries

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon
The United Nations is to fly in food aid for up to a million people affected by the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
According to the World Food Programme, an arm of the UN, the agency is bringing in its own aircraft to make sure food gets through to quarantined areas in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
The organisation said it would come to the aid of these worst Ebola-hit countries due to the problem of food crisis there.
The WFP Spokesperson, Fabienne Pompey, said, “The restrictions on movement in the most affected areas threatens food security. Commerce is affected; people cannot get to their fields; and prices rise at the markets; so the poorest have trouble feeding themselves.”
As a result of the Ebola outbreak, the WFP said it had already started feeding several thousand people in the worst affected areas, including the families of victims who have been quarantined, orphans, old people and hunters hit by the ban on the sale of bush meat.
With several commercial carriers suspending flights to the region because of the epidemic, she said the agency would start a new humanitarian service on Saturday (today) with an aircraft based in Conakry, Guinea which would link the capitals of the three countries.
She said two helicopters would also be brought in to deliver aid to the most isolated areas
Remember Upper Class Hotel, situated on 8 Old Market Road, in the commercial city of Onitsha , Anambra state that was  demolished on the order of Mr  Peter Obi, the immediate past governor of  the state,  following  the  discovery of  human heads and ammunition inside one of the hotel rooms?
A team of  policemen from the dreaded Special Anti-Robbery Squad,SARS  of the Anambra State Police Command, Awkuzu, had  stormed the hotel on August 1, 2013, where the hotelier, Bonaventure Mokwe,  his wife and some of his employees among who was a PhD student of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University  were arrested , including the hotelier’s wife.
Bonaventure Mokwe
Bonaventure Mokwe
While Mrs Mokwe was reportedly released hours later, her husband and his employees reportedly  remained in detention at SARS Akwuzu for 81 days  over alleged murder and unlawful possession of human heads and arms. They were thereafter , arraigned at a magistrate court on a four-count charge of conspiracy and murder, unlawful possession of two human heads and two AK 47 rifles with rounds of live ammunition.
There was, however, a twist in the whole detention and consequent demolition exercise, following claims by Mokwe that the whole scenario was a set up. The human skulls  recovered in his hotel according to him were  by some persons he alleged the Police knew.
In addition, Mokwe stated that the said Nnalue Okafor, whom he was accused of killing by the Police,  was confirmed by his parents in a news paper publication, to have been arrested April last year   byoperatives of SARS Awkuzu and wondered why he would be accused of killing him in August.
Speaking with journalists in Lagos,  on what he described as injustice  meted to him, Mokwe posited  that : “The general public now know that Mr Nnalue Okafor, whom I was accused of killing by the Police was a front line MASSOB member in charge of where they termed as barracks, at Silas Works road , Fegge, Onitsha. He was arrested by the Police on April 29 near his barrack and has not been sighted ever since.  It was during the period of supremacy tussle between MASSOB and another group called ‘Igbo Youths’, a MASSOB faction that emerged for political purpose towards the period of last  Anambra State governorship election.
“All these embarrassing scenarios in their investigation prompted the Anambra state Attorney -General to send back the case file to Akwuzu  SARS for real  investigation”, he said.
However, one year into the demolition of his hotel, justice according to him had not prevailed. Part of what the  justice he expected was compesation from Anambra State government for the demolition of the hotel which  he said was built in 1976,when he was barely nine years , by his late father.
He blamed the Police for the cause of  injustice, as he accused them of knowing the truth but failed to state it. For instance, Mokwe stated that the man who planted the human skull in his hotel room had owned up but that nothing had been done.
“My hotel demolition is over one year now and not a single charge is  pending against me. Why then was my hotel illegally demolished? Manufacturing another case is certainly an option but then again how did the first attempt play out? I am vigilant and waiting in every corner.
That was why I was able to inform the Inspector-General  of Police recently that one principal  participant in the  planting of  the exhibits in my hotel room, a  native of Onitsha was detained at cell 5 Awkwuzu, SARS and has equally opened up on how the set-up was organised. The principal suspect  was  one of the people I mentioned in my petition that was never investigated”
Awkwuzu SARS knows the name of every single person that participated in the set-up. But  arresting them will further compound the embarrassment of the state government”
Torture in detention
“My case would have been settled  while I was detained at Awkuzu SARS. Instead, in their attempt to save the state government the embarrassment,  SARS Awkuzu  made a U-turn    and set about manufacturing evidence .That  included the near death torturing of of my land agent , Chibueze Ikemene, to append his signature to an already written statement that  I was responsible for the death of one Nnalue Okafor.
I was taken to the back of of their torture chamber and my trouser was taken off and wrapped around my neck, with  a green rope  wrapped around it .They started pulling from both sides of my neck till I fainted . My thumb print was then inserted in an already written  statement collaborating that  of Chibueze Ikemene
But the statement with my thumbprint  and the one hand -written by myself after a strong protest from my lawyers were both filed in court by the Police. Which one will they rely on?
One incident stands out in my mind during my ordeal. On our way to SARS Awkuzu , on August 1, 2013, one of the operatives told me that ‘ I will kill you, whether your hands are clean or not. If your hands are clean, may your blood be on me and my children.”
Pacified
“When I was granted bail by the High court, it was at the height of the Anambra State governorship election and I was prevailed upon not  to make public statements and that I will be paid after the  election. The election has come and gone . My wife, Barr. Mrs N.J Mokwe sent several texts to the former governor and nothing came out of it.  Our mutual friends also approached the former governor  , yet nothing was done. He admitted to have been  misled by Onitsha natives but said  that I should be grateful that he did not allow Awkwuzu SARS to kill me. Contemporaries of my late father that are household names in Onitsha city, not minding the challenges of their age, also tried to make the former governor  see reason but he never bulged”
Appeal to Anambra state governor
Granted that the hotel was demolished in error of judgement, who then takes responsibility? I  am using this opportunity to extend an olive branch to the present Anambra State governor,Mr Willie Obiano and his predecessor to lay my issue to rest by addressing it. What was done to me because of motor park dispute between me and Onitsha natives also offended God.
I see the present governor of Anambra state as a person who may see reason to allow justice to reign by compensating me for the hotel they demolished in error.”

If not for the intervention of the First Lady, Dr. Patience Goodluck, the member representing Anaocha, Dunukofia and Njikoka Federal Constituency of Anambra State, Hon Uche Ekwunife would have been attacked by the Wife of Anambra State Governor, Mrs Ebele Obiano in faraway Poland yesterday night.

Both women were on the entourage of the First Lady to Poland.

Trouble started when on arrival with the First Lady, who was accompanied by Uche Ekwunife, Bola Shagaya and others, Ebele Obiano who was among those at the airport to receive the First Lady greeted every other person except Uche Ekwunife.

Later in the day, when Ebere Obiano came to see the First Lady, according to source with the First Lady, she again greeted everybody except Uche Ekwunife. Those who had noticed the trend asked her why the childishness, pointing at Uche, she said " I do not greet prostitute," to the astonishment of all those around.

Uche Ekwunife did not talk, according to our source, until Ebele Obiano told her that she will deal with her and make sure she crumbles all her businesses in Awka.

Enraged, Uche said i would not bandy words with you. "That you killed your husband's first wife for him to marry you does not mean you can deal with other women [Ebere Obiano use to be the secretary to Obiano until he lost the wife and married her]; that you are dealing with your alcoholic husband does not mean you can deal with me," Ekwunife said to Ebele Obiano.

Confused, Ebele Obiano said " my husband drinks champagne not alcohol," providing comic relief that set everybody laughing.

About to go physical, the First Lady now intervened joined by other women. They lambasted Wille's wife for lack of manners and morals. "Instead of you to go to Margaret Obi to teach you how to be a First Lady, I heard you no longer talk to her.

This your behaviour today has confirmed all that is said about you and your husband. Please if this is how you behave, never join me on any trip again, both within and outside the country.," the annoyed First Lady said.

Teacher rapes 10year old pupil

Adeniran Adebayo, (pictured above) a primary school teacher has been arrested and arranged in court by the Lagos state police command for raping a primary 4 pupil inside the toilet of their private primary school located on Olateju Ilesanmi Street, Baruwa, Ipaja area of Lagos, Punch reports.
Testifying before a Lagos State Chief Magistrate Court in Ebutte Metta yesterday August 13th, the Investigating Police officer from the state Criminal Investigation Department Yaba said he interrogated the little girl three times in which she affirmed that her teacher, Mr Adeniran, who is married with two children, had lured her to the school toilet and forced himself into her and then threatened to flog her if she screamed. Continue...
The police officer investigating the case said;

"I interviewed the victim after the matter was brought to the SCID. She said on the fateful day, she was in school after the closing hours and was waiting for her younger brother, who attended the same school, so they could go back home together. While waiting, she decided to get busy with her assignments. She said it was while she was doing the assignment that the teacher came and said she should follow him. He then took her to a toilet within the school premises and threatened to cane her if she screamed, unzipped himself, undressed the pupil and made love to her. The girl said she was crying while this was on. It was a female teacher, who was passing by that heard her cry. The female teacher came closer to have a better look and immediately the suspect saw her, he quickly zipped up. The pupil said the female teacher told him that being a teacher, he should never have taken advantage of the girl.”
The accused, Mr Adeniran, while narrating what happened to the Chief Magistrate, denied the claims, saying he never raped the girl
"I am the health teacher of the school. I married five years ago, and have two sons. There are six male teachers in the school. On that day, I didn’t call the girl. I only stood at the gate and asked her and her brother to go home. That was all. I was surprised that after four days, they came to my office and arrested me. The toilet in question has never even been used by anybody.” he said
The Chief Magistrate, O.O. Olatunji, was however not satisfied by his own account, stating that children between the ages of 6-11 never tell lies
"Kids hardly lie, especially when they are between the ages of six to 11. And that’s why I find it hard to believe the account of the defendant. People like you should not be in the society. If like you said there were six male teachers in your school, why did she decide to pick only you? It’s such a big shame,” the Chief magistrate said
The police prosecutor advised the court to remand the accused in prison but he was granted bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum. The judge ordered Adeniran should be remanded in Prison until the bail conditions have been fulfilled. The case was adjourned till October 15th

South Africa’s President accused of Witchcraft after mermaids were seen in Nkandla’s “Fire Pool” | Photo

nkandla-mermaids
EFF’s motor mouth, Julius Malema, has accused President Jacob Zuma of practicing witchcraft. This is after two mermaids were found in Nkandla’s “fire pool”, allegedly alive and kicking.
A leaked picture of the mysterious mermaids has been circulating social networks throughout the week, with many expressing their shock while others painted the gory photo as fake.
However, in a statement issued by presidential spokesman, Mac Maharaj, the two mermaids were confirmed as real.
“The president of the republic, Jacob Zuma, would like to set on record that although the two mermaids were discovered in a pool situated inside his Nkandla homestead, he was not aware of their existence. The Office of the Presidency will be in a better position to comment once an investigation by the security cluster has been concluded,” the statement read in part.
Opposition parties, particularly the EFF, were quick to accuse Zuma of witchcraft, sighting that he used the mermaids to protect him from being recalled from the seat of power.
“In the black community, we have what we call “ukuthwala – ho rwala”. People would consult sangomas for power and protection, which often comes in a form of muti and/or a snake which lives in a bedroom no one is allowed to go into…
“It all makes sense now. Zuma was accused of rape, fraud and corruption with hard core evidence presented before the court of law, but still walked free…. His mermaids protected him,” Malema told reporters.
The two mermaids were allegedly executed and transported to an undisclosed research laboratory in Durban

My husband came to Nigeria for better treatment – Patrick Sawyer’s wife

patricksawyer
Mrs Decontee Sawyerr, widow of Late Patrick Sawyerr, the Liberian man who came into Nigeria with the deadly Ebola virus, has said her sick husband risked all to come to Nigeria because he believed so much in the health system here & wanted to be properly diagnosed and treated. She explained her thoughts on her facebook wall and also took a swipe at the Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who called out her late husband recently in a CNN interview. What she wrote below…
“Good day my Facebook friends and FAM. I hope all is well with you. Thank you for all of your kind words and support for me and my family. You strengthen me more than you realize. According to an article written on Ava’s birthday (August 10) by Sabrina Tavernise of the New York Times, “…in another Liberian newspaper, The New Dawn, which cited footage from a security camera in the airport in Monrovia, Mr. Sawyer behaved strangely as he waited for his flight out of Liberia. He sat alone, avoiding physical contact with people, including an immigration agent who tried to shake his hand, and even lay flat on his stomach on the floor of a corridor of the airport, the paper reported.
“I’ve read other reports in other papers about Patrick’s ‘recklessness’. I get where they’re coming from, and they certainly have the right to feel the way they do. However, as Patrick’s widow, I would like to shed some light on this from another perspective. One that only I, his wife, would know,” she wrote. I knew Patrick better than anybody else (including himself).
He had told me many times in the past how much he didn’t trust the Liberian healthcare system. He would tell me about how a person would get checked in for one thing, and get misdiagnosed and get the wrong treatment as a result. On top of that, Patrick was a clean freak, and told me how filthy a lot of the hospitals were. He didn’t tell me this, but I know in my heart of hearts that Patrick was determined to get to Nigeria by all means because he felt that Nigeria would be a place of refuge. He has expressed to me many times in the past that he felt passionately about helping to be a part of strengthening Liberia’s healthcare system, but he knew it wasn’t there yet, and he wouldn’t want to take a chance with his life because a lot of people depended on him… Patrick had a passion for life, and he wouldn’t have wanted his to end. So, I bet anything that he was thinking, if I could only get to Nigeria, a way more developed country than Liberia, I would be able to get some help. How ironic. It has been reported that Patrick avoided physical contact with everyone he came across during his trip from Liberia to Nigeria. When he got to Nigeria, he turned himself in letting them know that he had just flown in from Liberia. Patrick went to Nigeria for help so that he can get properly diagnosed, and not misdiagnosed in Liberia. And if it came back that he did have Ebola, he trusted the Nigerian healthcare system a lot more than he trusted the Liberian’s. His action, as off as it was, was a desperate plea for help. Patrick didn’t want to die, and he thought his life would be saved in Nigeria.
I write today, not simply because of Patrick, but because of the broken healthcare system in the Liberia, and the government’s inability under President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (and other past Presidents) to fix it. Good doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers aren’t given the support they need to save lives. President Sirleaf went on CNN News throwing stones at Patrick, a man who can no longer defend himself, a man who worked tirelessly for Liberia. She should be ashamed of herself. I use to admire this woman, and was excited and proud of her accomplishment as the first woman President in the entire continent of Africa. She will always own that. We will always own that. It can’t be taken away from her. It’s something to be proud of. But this woman has failed her country,” she wrote.
