Anambra state government bans sand excavation on erosion-prone sites.

ANAMBRA State government, on Wednesday, slammed a ban on excavation of sand from erosion-prone sites throughout the state, saying it is an offence and threat to lives and property of residents in the state.
The state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, who banned the excavation on Wednesday, during his visit to Nanka erosion sites in Orumba North Local Government Area of the state, warned that he would visit the long arm of the law on anyone caught excavating sand in any of the erosion-prone sites.
He said that whoever was caught excavating sand from the erosion-prone sites, no matter how highly placed in the society, would be made to face wrath of the law, even as he tasked the residents in the erosion- prone areas, to keep vigil on the sites, so as to assit the government trap offenders.
Responding, the Local Government Chairman of Orumba North Local Government Council, Chief Okey Enekwe, assured Governor Obiano that his directives on sand excavation on erosion-prone sites in the local government, would be strictly adhered to.
He, therefore, cautiond persons excavating sand at the erosion sites, to desist from the act immediately or face the wrath of the law, adding that monitoring groups had been positioned in the erosion sites, to keep watch on the areas.
